The Pyramid of the Atlanteans in Tula de Allende – I decided to save it for dessert and headed there exactly one day before leaving Mexico City. In ancient times this city (Tula) was the old Toltec capital, who once came from the north and existed here from the 8th to the 12th centuries AD. At that time in Central America, the Toltecs were the leading force until the arrival of the Aztecs, who put an end to the Toltec civilization.

Tula is perhaps one of the few ancient ruined cities I've visited in the last two months where, beyond visual beauty, I felt the presence of some otherworldly force, dormant though it may be – but dormant only, it seems, by day. At night, I think, closer to evening, I sense that these sleeping Toltec warriors awaken – you can feel that their consciousness is active precisely during the nighttime hours.

I truly perceived these statues as alive, aware, and unlike Chichen Itza, which I perceived as something like a portal to a parallel dimension where the Maya perhaps continue their existence to this day, the Atlanteans show activity here as well – in our dimension. And that is mesmerizing.

The popular question: "What is it they're holding in their hands?" The answer – not a blaster from Star Wars and not a jackhammer. Simpler. It's an Atlatl – a spear-throwing device that increases the projectile's flight range up to 50 meters. This type of weapon was actively used by indigenous peoples before the arrival of bows.

— So what do you think about the Atlanteans roaming around at night? – I asked Pablito.
— Of course, at night they walk, – he said. – Those things have been standing there for many centuries. No one knows who built the pyramids. The nagual said the Spaniards weren't the first to discover them. Others came before them. God knows how many there were.
— Do you know what these stone figures represent? – I asked.
— They're not men, but women, – he replied. – The pyramid is a center of stability and order. The figures represent its four corners, the four winds, the four directions. They are the foundation, the base of the pyramid. They must be women, mannish women if you like. As you yourself know, we men aren't all that hot. We're a good binder, glue to hold things together, but nothing more. The nagual said the mystery of the pyramid lies in its structure. The four corners were raised to the summit. The pyramid itself is a man, supported by his warrior-women. A man who raised those who support him to the highest point. Do you understand what I'm saying?
Confusion must have shown on my face. Pablito laughed. It was a polite laugh.
— No, I don't understand what you're saying, Pablito, – I said. – But that's probably because don Juan never told me anything like that. Please, tell me everything you know.
— The Atlanteans are the nagual. They are dreamers. They represent the order of the second attention brought forward. That's why they're so frightening and mysterious. They are beings of war, but not destruction. The other row of columns – rectangular ones – represent the order of the first attention – the tonal. They are stalkers. That's why they're covered in inscriptions. They are very peaceful and wise, unlike the figures in the first row.
